Raisbeck Engineering Introduces New STC for Dual Aft Body Strakes on Cessna Caravan 208B

Seattle, WA – 16 August 2023 – Raisbeck Engineering, a leading innovator in aircraft performance enhancements, is proud to announce the issuance of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) SA02741SE for the installation of dual aft body strakes on the Cessna Caravan 208B. This enhancement is designed to optimize the aircraft’s aerodynamics, further improving its overall performance and operational capabilities.

The Cessna Caravan 208B, a versatile workhorse in the field of regional and utility aviation, has already demonstrated its prowess in various mission profiles. With the introduction of Raisbeck Engineering’s new STC, the aircraft’s performance envelope is set to expand, benefiting operators across the globe.

“Our dual aft body strakes smooth the airflow from the cargo pod and forward fuselage, improving directional stability and pilot control. I like to say they make the tail follow the nose.  But that is not all, in addition to the improved lateral stability, our Dual Aft Body Strakes reduce drag, improving cruise performance. The last thing I should point out is that this STC allows operators to build our EPIC Caravan incrementally, adding the strakes first followed by the forward cargo pod fairing later,” said Hal Chrisman, President at Raisbeck Engineering.

The new dual aft body strakes for the Cessna Caravan 208B are available immediately, interested operators are encouraged to reach out to their Raisbeck representative for more information on installation procedures and pricing.

Raisbeck Engineering is a renowned leader in aircraft performance improvements. With a rich history of innovation, Raisbeck Engineering develops and certifies modifications for a wide range of aircraft, enhancing their capabilities, efficiency, and overall performance. Raisbeck Receives FAA STC Approval for New “EPIC Caravan” Drag Reduction System

Seattle, Wash. — April 6, 2022 — Raisbeck Engineering, a leading provider of performance enhancement systems for business, commercial and military aircraft, today announced it has received Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for its new drag reduction system, EPIC Caravan, for the Cessna Caravan 208B aircraft. This STC enables Caravan 208B fleet and owner-operators who are flying cargo pod-equipped aircraft to reduce drag and consequently increase cruise speeds and/or decrease fuel burn.

EPIC Caravan was designed to address the aerodynamic drag associated with Cessna Caravan 208Bs equipped with factory cargo pods.  The 208B experiences a significant decrease in speed and an increase in fuel burn due to the cargo pod.  Raisbeck’s new drag reduction system is comprised of a composite Forward Cargo Pod Fairing and metal Dual Aft Body Strakes, and weighs only 38 lbs. The system offers operators the option to fly 5+ knots faster or go farther on the same fuel load.  In addition to the drag reduction, the Dual Aft Body Strakes provide significantly improved lateral stability.

“The Cessna Caravan aircraft is renowned for its rugged utility and adaptability to a wide variety of operations. EPIC Caravan will not only ease pilot workload, but also offer operators a more cost-effective, environmentally friendly way of flying,” stated Hal Chrisman, President of Raisbeck Engineering.  “The new system provides operators the option to utilize faster cruise speeds or to reduce fuel flows with lower ITT.  The STC also marks an important milestone for the company as we expand our product offerings in the business and general aviation market.”

In addition, Raisbeck’s engineering team has been actively pursuing certification for Textron’s current production model, the Cessna Grand Caravan EX. The Grand Caravan EX STC program is on track with certification expected later this year. Moreover, to meet a growing demand in the Brazilian market, the company has begun efforts to obtain ANAC approval for the new EPIC Caravan modification. This will be followed by EASA and other foreign certifications to serve the worldwide marketplace.

Raisbeck Engineering Unveils New Composite 5-Blade Swept Propeller

July 24, 2017 – Oshkosh, Wis. – Raisbeck Engineering is pleased to announce the launch of its new Composite 5-blade Swept Propeller for the King Air 350 in collaboration with Hartzell Propeller. Utilizing Swept Blade technology as an integral part of its design, Raisbeck Engineering and Hartzell Propeller have teamed to develop and certify an advanced Structural Composite 5-blade Swept Propeller made of carbon fiber. Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval is expected soon, with production by Hartzell immediately following.

Designed to improve passenger comfort and performance, the aerodynamic blade design combined with advanced structural design, maximizes thrust therefore increasing performance while reducing noise for the King Air 350. “We’re very excited about this new composite propeller and what it offers customers in terms of performance and efficiency,” said Lynn Thomas, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’ve teamed with Hartzell because of their years of experience and quality of manufacturing and standards. Raisbeck has had a long-term relationship with Hartzell and we are proud to work with them on this project.”

“By taking advantage of the aerodynamic effect of blade sweep, the strength of lightweight structural composites and robotic manufacturing technologies, Raisbeck and Hartzell have greatly improved performance across the board in all flight phases,” said Hartzell Propeller Executive Vice President JJ Frigge. Hartzell’s new five-blade swept propellers replace the standard Hartzell four-blade aluminum blade propellers. Raisbeck’s Swept Blade technology optimizes airfoil efficiency allowing for a larger diameter propeller with less blade tip noise and a comfortable cabin environment. Other benefits include unlimited blade life, reduced maintenance costs with 6 years/4,000 hours TBO, 3 years/3,000 hour Warranty, increased takeoff acceleration and better landing deceleration and accel-stop. The Composite 5-blade Swept Propeller provides a total weight savings of 47 pounds compared to the current OEM propeller for the King Air 350. An equipped King Air 350 with the new propellers will be on display at EAA AirVenture, Hartzell Booth #296-297.

Lynn Thomas portrait

REMEMBERING LYNN THOMAS

We are all saddened by the passing of our leader and friend, Lynn Thomas, who recently lost his battle with cancer.

A life-long aviation enthusiast, Lynn pursued his passion for aviation both professionally and personally, making his first solo flight at the age of 16. Over the years, he continued to fly as often as possible, both for business and pleasure

Lynn joined Raisbeck Engineering in 2017, bringing his unique talent to the company where his drive and leadership contributed greatly to Raisbeck’s continued success. His experience and achievements in the general aviation industry included sales, business management and marketing with both aviation manufacturers and dealers. Lynn started his career working with major investment firms, including Everen Securities and Paine Weber.

Lynn took an active interest in all facets of the companies he represented. He was often spotted on the shop floor at Quest Aircraft or roaming the halls and main lobby at Banyan. Here at Raisbeck, Lynn always took the opportunity to spend time with the Raisbeck team to support their efforts.

In addition to Lynn’s passion for aviation, he was an avid outdoorsman.  Whether fly fishing or paddling his hand-built canoe, he loved taking in the beauty found in nature.

He leaves us with a sense of great loss.  Lynn has left an indelible mark on all of our lives and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
